The origins of Kimia began when a woman with deep cultural roots and a young, fearless heart traveled to Oaxaca for the first time in summer of 2010 to learn salsa-dancing with her family. There was something about the rhythm of life, the land, the expansiveness of the Earth, the way the agaves tasted and smelled, that felt so familiar, like she had been there many times before. She would never forget her very first kiss of mezcal as she gazed upon the surrounding mountains. How it ignited something deep within her, tasting like freedom and the wild soil she was standing on. 

Every minute that she spent in Oaxaca exploring, inhaling the colorful sights and sounds, she felt she had more knowledge of who she was than when she first arrived. So much so, that at this age of 18 she sat her parents down in the hacienda and told them she wouldn’t be going back home with them – that she’d stay there and teach English, she’d figured it out – she just knew that this land would play a permanent role in her life and evolution. She felt a commitment to Oaxaca and a connection to its people that was beyond words or explanation. Her purpose was ignited within her.

Over the next 10 years, her connection to Mexico’s culture and the spirit of mezcal continued to grow until she made the decision to embark on a journey to create a unique, small batch mezcal brand through which she could share this powerful plant medicine with the world in an intentional, sustainable, and meaningful way. A business that would also allow for her to give back to the land that powered her evolution. Every aspect of the brand would need to embody her mission.

This woman knew that for the foundation of this spirit to plant deep roots, it was important to partner with a woman who had strong ties to the country of Mexico, was driven to expand consciousness, and was committed to giving back as much as she was. She ventured out on a road-trip that would serendipitously lead her to meet her counterpart in the rolling, lush mountains of Oaxaca – San Jose del Pacifico. At the time, each of them was on their own internal quest and it was clear that the forces of nature brought these two together in a very special and magical way. In the coming months, their growing friendship and partnership would plant massive seeds of love into Kimia, which has now become a living, breathing force.

These two resilient, resourceful women set out together into the wild Oaxacan terrain in search of the elixir that would push boundaries and highlight the medicinal properties of mezcal as well as it’s sensuality. An elixir that would communicate the powerful exchange of energy that happens when many years of direct sunlight and photosynthesis within an agave is slowly consumed. They knew that after several years of exploration, when they sipped the secret recipe that is now Kimia, that this was the potion they needed to share with the world – it was unlike anything they had experienced before. Not only was the taste unmatched, but the internal ceremony that occurred within them with every kiss was undeniable.
